“What do you want?” Her voice was a whisper of sound.

“To get you out of my life as quickly as possible but as that seems unlikely, I’ll settle for your co-operation as I try to get you out of the Grand Canyon sized hole you seem to have found yourself in. How can one little slip of a girl be wanted dead by so many people?” He gave her an enquiring look but it seemed the art of conversation was lost, at least for this evening in any case. Raising an eyebrow at her lack of communication, he then shook his head. “You’re going to have to talk to me sooner or later, darling. If you don’t, we’re really going to be up against the odds.” Lying down beside her, he rested his head on the chintz-patterned quilt as he studied her expression.

“I want to go to sleep,” she whimpered, backing away from him.

“You need to relax before you stand a chance of accomplishing that feat.”

“Exactly,” she bit back, “so get the hell out of here.”

He snorted. This might have been the first time ever a female had ejected him from a bedroom. He found it wasn’t a particularly pleasing experience.

“Roll over.”

“I’m not having sex with you.”

“I think I’d know if you were.”

There was an outraged pause. “You’re not funny. I mean it. Other women may fall at your feet but I don’t find you remotely attractive, so don’t bother with the bedroom technique. You’ll be wasting your time. If that’s what you want from me, you might as well kill me now.”

A ghost of a smile played across his lips. “So melodramatic, princess, relax…everyone else may want to kill you, but I have the unfortunate task of trying to keep you alive. So let me make this clear. I do not want to have sex with you. I have no designs on your body. I do not need another unwanted houseguest in my life. If you play nicely, I’ll play nicely. Do we understand each other?”

As usual, Debbie Herbert created a stellar story that will stay with me for a long, long time. Skye is the young lady most of us were in our late teens; a confused, still-searching-for-herself adolescent who doesn’t give herself enough credit. I loved how well I could relate to her character. Kheenan was complex and multi-dimensional, demonstrating the effects of a lifetime of abuse and neglect while still allowing the story to stay light. The magic and world-building was astoundingly vivid and colorful, while the storyline flowed perfectly with sprinklings of real-life social issues throughout (the slavery of the human race by fairies for one). The amount of research that went into every detail was obvious. Debbie made sure she knew her stones and her fae mythology inside and out. Of course, I expected nothing less. “She was still alive when I was admitted, but if she hasn’t come back from where ever she went…” Austin cursed the burn in his eyes and his now watery vision. “Please, I need to know.”

The detective sighed and glanced at the door before he dropped the pictures back on the bench. When he approached the bed, he pulled the phone out of his pocket. “Normally, I don’t stick my ass out for anyone, but either you’re a genius of an actor or you’re telling the truth.”

Austin bit his lower lip and nodded. “I appreciate it. But do me a favor, whatever is said, please don’t let whoever is on the line know you are in the room, okay?” he asked and the detective hesitated. “Her life may depend on it,” he added very softly. Not to mention mine, he thought, but didn’t voice it.

The hardness in the detective’s face softened a fraction and he gave a small nod.

Austin rattled the number off and met the detective’s dark eyes. He punched the numbers in and pressed the speaker, holding the phone close to Austin’s mouth. The phone rang for what seemed like forever and then a tentative male voice answered.

“Hello?”

“Is Paige there?”

The low chuckle filled the line and Austin met the detective’s gaze.

“We were wondering just how long it would take for you to call, especially since she had your phone when I found her.”

“I swear…” Austin growled and pressed his teeth together against the threat poised to tumble from his mouth.

The low rumble of ancient words came over the line and Paige screamed in the background. The detective’s eyes glazed over and the phone dropped onto Austin’s chest. When the gun came out of his jacket, Austin’s blood froze along with his breath.

Paige’s pleas came through the line, her promises to do anything he asked if he would just spare Austin’s life burned him more than staring down the barrel of the gun.

Another set of words paused the detective’s trigger finger, but by his expression, he now recognized what was happening, and all color bled from his face.

“If you hurt her…” Austin huffed as his entire body contracted in anger. The pain that followed nearly ripped a grunt from his throat, but he was able to control the sound.

“Please,” Paige whispered in the background. “You don’t need to hurt him, I will do whatever you want, just leave him alone, please.”

“Paige, you don’t need to protect me,” he said, his voice soft, but firm.

“Are you alone?” Hunter asked and Austin wasn’t sure how to answer that. If he said no and Hunter uttered whatever command he had before, he would be dead in less than a minute. If he said yes, he might still be dead in the same timeframe.

“Yes,” he lied.

“Should we test that?”

Austin clenched his teeth and the detective was able to slightly shake his head. Horror filled his eyes at the lack of control he had over his physical form.

“Go for it,” Austin said, playing out the bluff.

I scanned the crowd. “I’m surprised he let people that aren’t part of the project in here.”

“He wouldn’t be announcing it if he wasn’t already ages ahead of the competition with the development of the idea. I bet he wants news of this to get out–increase his stock market value.” She shook her head. “In fact, he probably did some of it for the publicity.”

She had a point. Mercer never seemed to try to hide his life from the media. He constantly paraded his latest girlfriend out to different restaurants or shows. The reports had even filmed the entire first date with his last one. She hadn’t seemed to mind, either. Was she here, lapping up luxury at some suite in the Omni while he promised us greatness?

“In the lobby we have, lists of the divided groups and your responsibilities. We officially begin next week, and the leaders of each group will meet for a Retrospective every two weeks.” He pointed to a microphone at the edge of the stage near the stairs. “Before I leave you, the floor is open to a few questions.”

With several burning on my mind, I pushed past the others in the back, sprinted down the aisle to the stairs that lead to the stage and placed myself in front of the microphone. The other students began to fill in behind me with raised eyebrows at my speed. Yes, first!

“Well, we have an eager one,” Mercer’s rich voice filled my ears.

As I met his gaze and fell into the deepness of his green eyes, my heart dropped into my stomach, and everything I had planned to say blanked from my mind.

“What else did you mean if not dinner?” I smile, enjoying her squirm under my stare.

She clears her throat, opening the fridge door to hide her face, “How hungry are you?”

“Very.”

Her head pops up again, her gaze catching mine. “Very?”

“You have no idea,” I laugh.

“I think I do,” she smiles, the rascal twinkle back in her eyes, yanking bowls from the fridge. “No loafing around here, you have to get your hands dirty.”

I hold them up. “If hands could talk mine would shout dirty, filthy, sinner.”
